Mission Statement
"Building strong partnerships to support the Millington area business community by fostering thriving economic growth and community development."
2008 Plan of Work
The Millington Chamber of Commerce is an organization of businesses and individuals working together to advance the commercial, financial, industrial and civic interests in Millington, Tennessee. By forming a pool of skills and talent, the organization is able to accomplish much that an individual cannot.
Millington is blessed with so many positive things that have happened over the past few years. Look back at the BRAC of the late 1990s and the growth that has followed.
• Millington Industrial Development Board with 1,900 acres to develop and promote.
• New hangers at Millington Regional Jetport.
• American Medical Depot, Perkins, Lowes, Starbucks, Tractor Supply, Chile's, McAlister's, Tops Baraque, and many more new commercial businesses.
• Two new school facilities - Millington Elementary & Millington Central High School.
• Development of over 2,000 homes.
This is a great time to be in Millington!
The Chamber's four major events provide excitement each quarter:
Military Appreciation Breakfast (Thursday, March 27, 2008) recognizes the Naval Support Activity Mid South Sailors of the Year as well as other Service Branches of the Military in the area.
Millington Chamber Business Expo (Tuesday, May 6, 2008). The number of booths have grown each year from 24 to 40 to 60 to 70 finally to 81 in 2007. Several new attractions were added in 2007 to increase foot traffic.
Millington Chamber - Bancorp South Golf Classic (Friday, August 22, 2008) benefits the Millington Education Foundation while recognizing our existing industry. Our tournament is scheduled to be the first tournament of the newly started school year and is expected to be sold out just like the 2006 & 2007 Golf Classics were.
Millington's Annual Dinner (November 6, 2008) is when Millington gets together to celebrate. Congratulations to Mayor George Harvell who was inducted into the Millington Hall of Honor, and to Bethany K. Huffman the Chamber's 2007 Person of the Year. You will want to be there to celebrate all the successes for 2008.
Each of the following committees will play an important role in the 2008 Chamber body of work.
The Finance Committee is about so much more than just monthly finance reports, budgets, and an annual audit. Not to minimizing those responsibilities, but our 2008 Finance Committee will be building on the work that has been done to enhance our Sustaining Investment program. This will develop our ever-expanding financial resources so we can take all of our Chamber efforts to brand new heights. The committee is committed to locating and identifying former and potential Chamber partners and developing recruitment strategies to grow the Chamber to all new partner heights.
It was the Education Committee that worked with the Shelby County School Board in bringing to the community the new Millington Central High School and Millington Elementary facilities. The Committee hosted the ground breaking ceremonies for the two schools. The 2007 Education Committee had a B.L.A.S.T. (Business Leaders And Schools Team). The BLAST program included all 276 students in the junior college/vocational track at MCHS. Each student toured a local chamber business in BLAST one. BLAST two brought that business leader to their class room to talk about how they might prepare for getting a job with that business. BLAST three brought special training to every student on customer service, life skills, and communication. We are looking forward to what kind of BLAST the Education Committee will come up with for 2008. They will also organize and host the annual Chamber Golf Classic sponsored by BancorpSouth Bank.
The Marketing Committee will be challenged with the work of reviewing, updating, and developing all necessary printed materials in 2008. We are especially excited about the new website. The new website scheduled to go live in the summer of 2008.
• 2008 Membership Directory/Millington Magizine
• New updated official Visitor's Guide coming in February 2008.
• New state-of-the-art website going live summer of 2008.
This committee will also organize and host the Chamber Annual Dinner.
The only city in Tennessee still participating in the state of Tennessee Department of Community and Economic Development's Three Star program. This year will be Millingtons 15th year in the program. The 2007 asset-based, five-year strategic plan will be updated this year and we are anticipating many new and exciting values coming to Millington based on our participation.
The Retail Committee will take on organizing and hosting the annual Business Expo with the challange of having even more than the 81 businesses that participated last year. The bigger challange is to get even more people from the community to attend. Plans are already underway to achieve both of these goals.
- Military Affairs Committe
New for 2007, the Military Affairs Committee established and will be rolling out the first annual Millington Salutes the Military promotional program in May 2008. Every Chamber business will want to take advantage of this promotion. The committee will also plan and host the Military Appreciation Breakfast (Thursday, March 27, 2008), sponsored by First South Credit Union. They will set many other new goals and have many other accomplishments.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. "
