Rail

Seven Class I railroads provide Millington with service to all parts of the nation. Memphis is one of only three cities served by five Class I intermodal railroads, each with in-bond container service. The other cities are St. Louis and Chicago. Amtrak's "City of New Orleans" Chicago to New Orleans passenger service operates on the IC railway in Memphis.

Systems serving Memphis are:

  • Union Pacific/Southern Pacific
  • Burlington Northern Santa Fe
  • CSX Corporation
  • Norfolk Southern
  • Illinois Central/Canadian National

The West Tennessee Regional Business Center, located in the City of Millington, is adjacent to the Canadian National-Illinois Central Railroad's mainline track, which runs from Chicago to New Orleans

With these rail systems, corporations can make timely shipments to all 48 contiguous states and Alaska, as well as Mexico and Canada. With daily switching, double-stack trains and super piggyback capability, there are intermodal yards at six rail yards. With microbridge, a container from the Far East may move from a West Coast port directly to Memphis and a Land Bridge allows transfers of containers to and from the Port of New Orleans.

The Canadian National-Illinois Central Railroad (CN) is the only railroad which crosses the continent east-west and north-south, serving ports on the Atlantic and Pacific as well as the Gulf coast. CN links customers to all three NAFTA nations. CN began in the early days of Canadian and American railroading. They work with a number of shoreline connectors to satisfy shipping needs and move a variety of goods; including petroleum, chemicals, fertilizer, coal, metals, minerals, forest products, intermodal and automotive.
